Descrição: | (language English and Portuguese)
The course intends to discuss the meaning of some of the most popular classic fairy tales, going beyond their edulcorated versions popularised by children’s adaptations or animated films. It is articulated in four units: 1. Introduction: historical fairy tales and their disturbing contents from Giovanni Straparola to Charles Perrault. This lesson will explore the meanings and topics of the tales from the XVIth and XVIIth seen as the mirror of the epoch and its society. 2. Sleeping Beauty and the domestication of rape. In this lesson we will be looking into the disturbing concept of the female body made available for male’s aggression, starting with folk tales, and then move to the gentilised Charles Perrault’s version and its later transformations. 3. Bluebeard and the questioning of the patriarchal system. This lesson will analyse contrasting interpretations of the tale and its moral (a lesson in obedience or a warning against marital practices sanctioned by patriarchal society). We will then look into the career of the tale as a horror story in later times. 4. Puss in Boots as the tale of trickery, falsehood and social ambition. The final lesson will look into the grim social dynamics hidden behind an apparently charming figure of the cat with the boots. We will investigate the role of animal figures in the fairy tales and try to understand while this Charles Perrault’s tale became so popular in spite of promoting blatantly immoral behaviour. We will then look into some attempts to rectify the ethic message of the story in later literary and cinematographic adaptations. 2. A Bela Adormecida e a domesticação do estupro. 3. Barba Azul e o questionamento do sistema patriarcal.
