Objectives:
The aims of this course are to: 1) discuss the acute and chronic effects of eccentric exercise on health, fitness, and performance; 2) clarify the benefits and drawbacks of eccentrically-biased exercise; 3) explore the relationship between exercise-induced muscle damage and muscle hypertrophy; 4) analyze the effectiveness of various nutritional and therapeutic interventions designed to prevent and/or accelerate recovery from exercise-induced muscle damage; 5) introduce and examine the practice of moderate-load eccentric exercise for enhancing health and body composition.
Justificativa:
Rationale:
This course aims to deepen the understanding of concepts and procedures related to the implementation of eccentric exercise, which are still not widely covered in undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Its offering is therefore justified both by the dissemination of knowledge and by the potential for incorporating these procedures and interventions into the research projects of students enrolled in the postgraduate programme. The course will be delivered in person
Conteúdo:
A disciplina será ministrada no idioma inglês.
Content:
The course will be taught in English, and its contents will include: - A brief review of neuromuscular anatomy and physiology; - An uptade on the sliding filament theory of muscle contraction, including the role of titin in eccentric actions; - Muscle and cortical activation during eccentric exercise; - Cardiovascular responses to eccentric exercise; - Eccentric exercise-induced muscle damage; - Nutritional strategies for recovery from exercise-induced muscle damage; - Therapeutic interventions and the attenuation/recovery of exercise-induced muscle damage; - Relationship between muscle hypertrophy and muscle damage; - Modeate-load eccentric exercise as a strategy to improve health, body composition and performance
Type of Assessment:
Students will present seminars on research articles from a pre-defined list. They will also write essays on the content of the seminars they present and literature reviews on the same topic. The final concept will be based on the grades assigned to their essays (3,0) and seminar presentations (7,0). The concept system will use the following grades: A (Excellent, 8,5 - 10,0), B (Good, 7,0 - 8,4), C (Satisfactory, 5,0 - 6,9), R (Insufficient for passing, 0,0 - 5,0%).
Notes/Remarks:
The lists of articles for seminars and essays will be updated with each iteration of the course.
